Our Great Lady has gone and she left us with a hay wagon full of happy memories. We are sad to announce that our Mother, Sophie Pawlyk, the only child of Harry and Anna Bernaski (deceased) passed away peacefully, surrounded with love on January 29, 2016, at the age of 101 years. She was born on October 14, 1914 in Fort William and attended Crawford School in Westfort.

Sophie married Michael Pawlyk and began a life of being a farmer’s wife. Their farm was located in South Stanley, Paipoonge Township, a very picturesque area with beautiful views and lots of hills. During her life on the farm, Sophie became a member of the Stanley Women’s Institute and was a 4H Homemaking Club leader in the community. She was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Slate River and also attended St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Rosslyn Village. Sophie’s greatest joy was raising her children and watching them enjoy life on the farm.

She was an exceptional homemaker with her gardening, canning, baking and cooking. At the time we didn’t have a freezer, Mom canned the beef in quart sealers. She excelled in sewing, knitting, crocheting and painting.

After the children were employed in the City and were married, Sophie and Mike moved to the City also. They both were involved with the Moose Lodge on May Street.

Sophie really enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved being with them. She was proud as a peacock.

She was predeceased by our Dad on May 4, 1992 at the age of 87. She will be sadly missed by her children Natalie (Ross) Carpenter and Bernie (Lois). Also left to mourn her passing are her grandchildren Holly Carpenter (Wayne) and their children Devin, Kayla and Nickolas; Delray Carpenter (Wendy) and their children Alice and Shane; Jerry (Dyanna) Carpenter and their children Keiran, Aidan and Carys; Lynne (Michael) Rice and their daughter Katrynne and Lori (Tom) Botka.

The family would like to thank CCAC and the caregivers who allowed Mom to remain in her own apartment until last August, particularly Brenda and Cheryl. We would also like to thank the compassionate and caring staff at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, the Hospice Unit of St. Joseph’s and Dr. Krupa. You took exceptional care of our mother. Funeral services for Sophie will be held at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Rosslyn Village on Friday, February 5, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. officiated by The Rev. Charlene Scriver. A private interment will take place in Mountain View Cemetery. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Rural Food Cupboard of Oliver Paipoonge.
