It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley Chalat unexpectedly at home on September 23, 2016 at the age of 75.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Nellie and Michael Savitsky, sisters Helen Nash, Elsie Burachinski and brother Sidney Savitsky. She is survived by her loving husband Allan Chalat, her children Shelley (Jim) Frost, Michael (Stacy) Chalat, grandchildren Shannan and Mitchell Frost and Haley Chalat, and her sister Jean Savitsky.

Born in Fort William, Ontario on June 29, 1941 Shirley grew up in Westfort. She attended hairdressing school in Winnipeg Manitoba and returned to Thunder Bay where she married Allan Chalat in September of 1962. They recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.

Shirley had a long and successful hairdressing career beginning at Nu Fashion Salon. She opened her own salon at their home on Riverview Drive so that she could be home with her young children at the time and continued hairdressing there until her unexpected passing. She also worked part-time hairdressing throughout her children’s teenage years at Pinewood Court and enjoyed the time spent with the residents there.

Shirley always looked forward to her family vacations at their home in Kissimmee Florida and created many treasured memories during the time spent there with family and friends. She mostly enjoyed spending much time and summers at the family camp at Shebandowan Lake. Family, friends and extended family were always welcome and she would often “feed an army” there, as she loved to cook and bake for a big crowd. She loved music, dancing, figure skating, being out on the pontoon boat, visiting with friends and shopping. She was always in close contact with her sister Jean and late sister Helen.

One of her greatest joys in life was spending time with her grandchildren. For many years Grammy was a fixture at the Fort William Gardens as she loved watching her granddaughter Shannan figure skate. She always kept up with Mitchell’s hockey and football pursuits. Haley could always make her smile with her cartwheels and dancing.

She will be fondly remembered by the neighbours she so often stopped to chat with, by her close friends, the friends of her children and grandchildren she always welcomed to the family camp in Shebandown and made her own, and by her family that she deeply cherished. Her sense of style and the love she had for her family and friends will always be remembered. She will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.

Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Service to celebrate Shirley’s life on Thursday, September 29th at 10:00 a.m. at Jenkens Funeral Home, 226 South Syndicate Ave.
