Our great gentleman has gone and he left us with loads of many happy and humorous memories.

The family are sad to announce the passing of Ross Cliff Carpenter on July 24, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Ross was born on July 2, 1933, being the youngest child of the now late Kenneth and Alma. (Cliff) Carpenter of Harkness Street, Fort William. On June 27, 1963, at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Vickers Heights and officiated by Rev. Mark Conliffe, Ross married Natalie Geraldine (Lee) Pawlyk, the only daughter of the now late Mike and Sophie Pawlyk of South Stanley.

In his youth, Ross was a past member of the Navy Reserve in Fort William. In their youthful years, Ross and his buddies enjoyed roller skating and at that time they organized a Roller Hockey group at the Fort William Gardens. Ross also loved roller skate dancing. He had a passion for the country and he built our home in North Neebing.

As well as being involved with carpentry, Ross had a small business doing door closer repairs.

When the Rectory was being built in Rosslyn Village, Ross volunteered his help. He was a former treasurer of the Sunday School at St. Mark’s and also Rector’s Warden at times.

He offered the use of his large garage and equipment for the building of bunk beds for Camp Gitchagomee at Sandstone Lake. Also, he was instrumental in obtaining mattresses for the bunk beds which came from the P.A. General Hospital at no charge.

For a few years, Ross sat on the Board of Directors at Cross Roads.

Ross and Natalie are past members of the Power and Sail Squadron in Thunder Bay.

For 14 ½ years, Natalie and Ross operated Carpenter’s Store on Rosslyn Road and it was here where they met many very fine people in the area.

When his sons were in Scouts, Ross became involved with the Voyager Group at the Old Fort.

Ross was employed for 38 years at the Fort William Sanatorium, later known as Hogarth-Westmount Hospital, 1950-1988. In 1988 to 2009, he operated the Sewing Centre in the South Ward.

In their single days, Ross and his brother Ken built their family camp at Sandy Beach. Many times he would take his boat from Sandy Beach and troll around the Welcome Islands, coming back with a good catch of lake trout.

The five of us became outdoors people, camping at Quetico, Sleeping Giant and Burchel Lake were the favorites. Then a larger boat was purchased and property on Lake Superior.

The favorite drive was usually through Slate River and into South Stanley, very picturesque area with lots of hills and beautiful views of the mountains, and where the old Pawlyk farm was once located.

He was very proud of his grandchildren and loved visiting with them. Some called him Grandpa and some called him Happy Pappy because of his “smile”.

He is survived by his loving children and grandchildren: Holly Carpenter (Wayne) and their children Devin, Kayla and Nickolas; Del Carpenter (Wendy) and their children Alice and Shane; Jerry (Dyanna) Carpenter and their children Kieran, Aidan and Carys. Also survived by sister Shirley (Harry) Orok; brother Ken Carpenter and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bernie and Lois Pawlyk. As well as 7 nephews and 3 nieces; 12 great nieces and 5 great nephews and 1 great great nephew.

He was predeceased by sister-in-law Elaine Carpenter.

But most of all, his memory will live on in the heart of the love of his life, Natalie, wife of 53 years, affectionately known as Lee.

A Memorial Service for Mr. Ross Carpenter will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Anglican Church with Rev. Charlene Scriver officiating.

Memorial donations to the Alzheimer’s Society or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Thank you to all the wonderful Doctors, Nurses and staff at the Thunder Bay Regional and also at the St. Joseph’s Hospital and the CCAC people that cared for Ross. Thank you to all who found time to visit Ross.
