Orville Eldon Tozer passed away peacefully at Pioneer Ridge on Thursday, November 20, 2014. The youngest son in the family of twelve born to George and Annie Tozer, he was born May 22, 1926 in Fort William. He left school following grade 8 to go to work. He worked at Canadian car building airplanes, in the bush camps and river drives in Beardmore, on the Dew Line and in the grain elevators. He married Jean Elizabeth Barrie on August 22, 1952. They built a home on Riverdale Road on family property and in 1955 they travelled to New Zealand where Orville worked for two years for Tasman Pulp and Paper in the forestry operations. Upon their return to Canada, he began working for Barnett McQueen as a Construction Millwright. He worked in every paper mill and mine throughout Northwestern Ontario, often getting up at 4:30 am on Monday mornings to drive to Marathon or Longlac, wherever the contract was. He worked his way up to millwright superintendent and was invited to Toronto to participate in the drafting and writing of the provincial millwright’s exam, a huge accomplishment for a boy with a grade 8 education.

He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. Hunting with his brothers and nephews, fishing with Jean and their family and exploring together the creeks, rivers, lakes and back roads of Northwestern Ontario. He was an ambitious and passionate gardener, who supplied his family and friends with fresh fruit and vegetables. He was also an excellent cook and bread maker with an appreciation of fine food and wine.

Orville lost Jean on May 31, 2014 and he never really recovered from her loss. He is survived by his children and grandchildren, Janice (Bill) Dickerson, Adam and Dana (Kevin Ala-Pantti), Nancy Madigan (Edward Burrows), Matthew Madigan, Kevin (Lorraine) and Noeline. He is also survived by his sister Joyce Zatti, his sister in law Fern Tozer, sister and brother in law Mary Lou and Ernest McKenzie, brother in law Jack Wegener and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and a come and go reception will be held at Pioneer Ridge on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 from 1 – 3PM. The family respectively requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Wesway, St. Elizabeth’s Health Care, the Pioneer Ridge Auxiliary or the Alzheimer Society.

“The Fallen Limb”

A limb has fallen from the family tree

I keep hearing a voice that says “Grieve not for me”

Remember the best times, the laughter, the song

The good life I lived while I was strong

Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through

My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest.

Remembering all, how truly I was blessed.

Continue traditions, no matter how small,

Go on with your life, don’t worry about falls.

I will miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin,

Until the day comes we’re together again.

(Unknown)
