It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of our devoted and loving mother, Marion Elizabeth Buitenhuis (Fernell), known to all as Betty, on September 20, 2016 at the age of 91. Betty was born in Gainsborough, SK on August 15, 1925 to Myrtle and Percy Fernell, who later resided in Carnduff, SK. Betty’s only surviving sibling is brother Dave Fernell of High River, AB. Sadly left to mourn, but with many memories, is her husband of over 66 years, Joe (William Johannes) Buitenhuis of Thunder Bay and her children, daughter Lydia Janice Elizabeth (nee Buitenhuis) of Carleton Place, ON, sons John (Susan) Buitenhuis and David Buitenhuis of Thunder Bay, ON, son Donald Buitenhuis of Stittsville, ON, and daughter Judy Buitenhuis of Parksville, BC. Betty will be remembered fondly by her granddaughters Sherry Minnella (Carmen), Kristen Buitenhuis, Ashley Buitenhuis, Katie Elizabeth Dixon, Alyssa Buitenhuis; and grandsons Stephen Buitenhuis and Derek Buitenhuis. Betty was blessed with two great grandchildren, Luca and Alia Minnella. Although Betty’s love for her immediate and extended family came first, she had a generous and friendly spirit that touched many people. Betty left her western roots to be with her sweetheart Joe in Niagara Falls, ON, where her children were born and she made many friends. Since 1971, she made many new friends in Thunder Bay and loved hosting out-of-town guests. Betty enjoyed sewing, square dancing, bowling, and bridge, to name a few of her pastimes. Family and friends shared their memories of Betty at a Celebration of Life on Sunday, September 25, 2016 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Roseview Manor, 99 Shuniah Street in Thunder Bay.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society Thunder Bay.
