The family of Laila Kantola announce with sadness, yet joy, that their mother completed her earthly journey on March 27 2016. One of God's little lambs, she is now rejoicing in the presence of The Good Shepherd. Laila was born on May 13, 1924 and grew up on a Conmee farm with 4 sisters and a brother. Married in 1949 to Laurie Kantola, they raised their family of five boys in Thunder Bay and at Sandstone Lake (Larry's Cabins); lots of fresh air, hard work, music and saunas! Mom always had lots of Finnish "sisu" yet also a very gentle spirit. Shy and tending to be quiet, she was not only adored by children but also by animals which she loved along with art, music and nature. Her outstanding artistic abilities have influenced her children and grandchildren. She shared "wonderful words of life" teaching Sunday school for many years at church in the city or at Sandstone. Beside many many trips to camp, other travels ranged from Hawaii to southern USA to Quebec City. Ever mindful of instruction from above, she endeavoured to live her life the right way and to instil good values in her children. She was predeceased by her husband, Laurie in 2002; son Andrew in 2015; all but one sibling (two siblings died in childhood); and, her parents Anton & Serafina Pokki. She is survived by her children - Ken, Len, Roy and John and their respective families; her sister, Bertha Wicklund, nephews, nieces and cousins. Also surviving her are 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

It is with heartfelt appreciation that the family would like to thank the larger "like family" family of caregivers, support staff and volunteers at St. Joseph's and Hogarth that enriched Mom's life so much since early 2010. You are a part of our cherished memories of Mom!

A funeral service will be held 11 AM Friday April 1 at Evangel Pentecostal Church, 1260 Balmoral Street, with a reception following. Visitation will be available one hour prior to the service.
