Mrs. Bertha Wicklund (nee POKKI) 89, passed away very peacefully at Pinewood Court January 29, 2017 where she was a resident since June 2012. She was born in Conmee Twp on January 31, 1927, passing away just shy of her 90th Birthday.

On October 29, 1956, she married Ivar Wicklund. Together they raised Earl, Kevin, Alexis and Alison, first living in Westfort, then moving to Northwood soon after the arrival of the twin girls. Bertha worked as an RNA but decided to retire when her daughters were born.

Not really a world traveller per se, she did get to enjoy and experience places in Canada like the West Coast and the East Coast, visiting family in New Brunswick, touring Ottawa and Toronto in her youth. She had vacationed in Florida and made countless trips to Superior Wisconsin to visit her sister Mamie who resided there. Abroad, she visited family and toured Finland. Summers were spent at the family camp with the sauna going and playing the occasional card game. She liked her music and ‘attempted’ (wink wink) to try and play piano, organ, guitar, accordion and the harmonica. She had a real soft spot for cats and was truly not a fan of dogs. Even the staff at Pinewood Court could tell this when therapy dogs came in to visit.

She is survived by her 4 children Earl, Kevin (Susan) who are enroute from Langley BC, Alexis (Kevin Leveque) and Alison (Greg Allam); grand children Derek (Erin) and Kent Wicklund, Hannah, Ryan and Emily Leveque; Chloe and Greta Allam; and great granddaughter Kaelyn.

Bertha was predeceased by her husband Ivar Wicklund, her parents, a brother Uuno Pokki and her 6 sisters Irene Talvitie, Terttu Garland, Mamie Walker, Laila Kantola, as well as Tekla and Vilna Vienno in childhood.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service and reception will be held on Monday, February 6, 2017, at the Jenkens Funeral Home and Reception Centre, 226 South Syndicate Avenue at 11:00 am with Pastor Jari Lahtinen officiating, followed by coffee and pastries. Interment to take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Heartfelt thanks to the nurses, support staff and volunteers of Pinewood Court for their care and compassion; especially those in Hummingbird, where Bertha was surrounded by her ‘second found family’.

If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to either the Alzheimer Society Thunder Bay or the Canadian Mental Health Association Thunder Bay.
