After a long battle with pneumonia Anne Gifford passed away peacefully early Friday morning, May 6, 2016.

Anne was born in New Hamburg,Ontario on June 18, 1930. She was the third of four children raised on a dairy farm. She shared many fond memories of growing up on the farm and the friends she made. Many of the friendships she made from her youth became lifelong friendships that she would rekindle on her annual summer visits to southern Ontario. She eventually moved to the nearby city of Kitchener to work. There she met Herb Gifford and in 1953 they were married. Two years later they moved to Thunder Bay when Herb took a job transfer. Anne was also able to transfer within the Loblaws grocery chain. From that point they decided to remain in Thunder Bay because of all the new friendships they made. Anne and Herb traveled throughout the world to Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean. They loved to travel and when they did it was usually with friends.

Anne retired from the grocery business in 1994 after 38 years and kept very busy. She enjoyed volunteering in the community, attending Calvary Lutheran church where she was a member for 50 years, carpet bowling and organizing an annual get together of 18 retired co-workers. One of Anne's favourite things to do throughout the years was to get together with four other friends; Freda Brewer, Jean Cheryk, Winnie Dixon and Dora Littlefield, taking turns to celebrate each other’s birthday. Perhaps the most exciting time of the year for her was the summer when her granddaughter Brooke would visit. She would cram as much doting and spoiling in that one week to make up for the other 51 she did not get to see. Anne eventually entered the computer world when she purchased her iPad and thought it was the most wonderful device because she could actually see and talk to her relatives and became quite proficient at it.

She would often say, "I have some of the best friends and neighbors" and "Where would I be without my friends, they are so good to me". A common theme throughout her life was developing and cultivating friendships. Anne cherished the friendships she made throughout her life especially those she made in Thunder Bay. She truly believed that she had a wonderful family and deeply missed her husband after he passed.

Anne is survived by her son Larry and granddaughter Brooke of Colorado, her sister Vera Becker of New Hamburg and brother Nile Heldman of Barrie.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, May 10th, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Jenkens Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre, 226 S. Syndicate Avenue. Funeral services for Mrs. Gifford will be held on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Jenkens Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre with reception to follow. Interment will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
