It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Alma Louise Steinert (nee Heisholt), a mother, daughter, wife and neighbor, on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at the venerable age of 85. Alma rooted for the Jays and the Leafs, summer and winter, good seasons and poor ones. She was a diehard. She drove fearlessly and played organ with the volume turned up loud, polka music and Amazing Grace. She baked good chocolate chip cookies, kept a tidy front yard and she wound the clock on her night table every evening before bed, faithfully.

Alma was born in the City of Port Arthur on March 5, 1931. As a child, she and her friends enjoyed climbing the steps of the grain elevator in which her father Thor was employed. They climbed to the top. How many steps? She was unable to say. What she remembered was the view – spectacular.

Alma met her husband in Longlac, Ontario in 1948. William had no hips. He went straight up and down. It was a good thing that suspenders were in style. Alma and William made little Longlac their home for 23 years. The pair (along with two thousand other people) coaxed Longlac into existence, and afterwards, made Longlac the pleasant town it was. Alma curled there, played bingo there and raised a son there.

Alma and William lived in Terrace Bay for eleven years. It’s accurate to say that Alma found joy in every foggy day. She had many friends.

Patience is a virtue and Alma made an effort to be patient with others. The women at her bank were pleased to know her as were the women who work hard for Wal-Mart. She loved her husband of 53 years. She loved her children and her daughter-in-law Kaye. She loved her sisters and brother. She loved her nieces and nephews.

Alma was predeceased by husband William Henry Steinert; parents Thoralf and Isabel Heisholt; brother Maurice and sisters Edna Phillips, Helen Dusk and Colleen Shearer.

Alma is survived by sons Gordon and Sherman; sister Shirley Westerback; daughter-in-law Kaye Taylor Steinert and numerous nieces and nephews.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
